Year 2

                Welcome to Year Two!

         Kingfishers and Owls

 Meet the team.

Mrs Limmer (Kingfishers)

Mr Kightley (Owls)

Welcome to Year Two!

This is an important stage for children in primary school as they are now the oldest in Key Stage one. Children will be encouraged to become more independent in both their learning and their organisational skills, including being responsible for their own belongings. Children are asked to bring their reading books and records to school on a daily basis with reading books being changed regularly. Children will also visit the school library once per week when they can choose a book to enjoy and to share with you at home.

We hope that your child has a fantastic year learning in Year 2. We have tried to create an exciting curriculum that will develop your child's love for learning.

2025/2026 Curriculum

 Autumn term 1

Oceans and continents

This is our first Geography unit. Children will learn the names of the 7 continents and 5 oceans. They will learn more about the countries within the United Kingdom and the human and physical features they may see.

This theme carries through into our English unit where we look at the story 'The Umbrella'. The story is about a little black dog that gets taken on a journey around the world.

Autumn 2

London's Burning!

The children will look at The Great Fire of London during our history lessons. This term has many cross-curricular links and the children will be learning the story through history, drama, dance and art.

Spring Term

People who changed the World

In this term, children will be exploring significant people that changed the world. They will learn about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole and how they influenced hospitals today. In the second half of the term we will focus on Isaac Newton.

Summer term 1

How does your garden grow?

In this term, children will be learning about living things in science and focusing on how plants grow and what they need to survive.

In English, we look at the beautiful story 'The Tin Forest' written by Helen Ward. The story is about an old man who lives in a forsaken place where plants no longer grow.

Summer term 2

Our Planet

This is our second geography unit. Children will learn more about the world oceans and how the climate and the environment is making changes to the world. We look at two stories this term: Dear Greenpeace and Somebody Swallowed Stanley.

Please see the attached term newsletters for further information about each subject.

P.E Days

Owls Monday and Thursday
Kingfishers Monday and Thursday

Please ensure that children have the correct P.E kit in school and that earrings are removed on these days. We will send PE kits home to be washed at the end of each half-term.

Spellings and Homework

Spelling Zappers

We will be using spelling zappers this year to track the progress of children's spellings. Each child will be given personalised spellings taken from the first 100 and then the next 200 HFW. Once they are secure in these, they will move onto Year 2 spelling rules.

To help practise spelling, we advise children to use this method -

It is also a good idea to practise putting words into sentences to secure an understanding of the meaning.

Homework

Reading is an essential part of your child's learning experience. We would like for the children to read at least four times a week. Your child will take home with them a reading band book and a library book. Please record all reading in their reading record. These will be checked weekly by class teachers.

Children have also got access to Times Tables Rock Stars and Numbots. Children should aim to play either of these for 10 minutes per week.
