Under 11 East Midlands County Basketball Tournament

On Sunday 8th June, 9 students from Belton Lane Primary School and 3 students from Cliffedale Primary school attended the Under 11 East Midlands County Basketball Tournament at The Wildcats Arena in Nottingham.

Held every year, it gives local players the opportunity to represent their county, whilst experiencing opposition from the East Midlands region who are very much accustomed to competition. Nine teams competed consisting of girls and boys where each quarter was played against their own counterparts, this made for very intense matches!

Coached by Jimmy ‘Jumpshot’ Smith and accompanied by team manager Miss Copping, the Lincolnshire team faced squads from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

Coach Smith commented

"The Children did themselves extremely proud! Following their first loss against Nottinghamshire they recovered well to take a win against Northamptonshire, putting them in great stead for a very close match against Leicestershire B, losing by just 1 basket. The last match involved a battle against a very competitive Leicestershire A Team who finished the tournament as winners. Our girls, especially the Year 5 pupils, put in a valiant effort to compete with their adversaries but it was a huge step forward Lincolnshire basketball. In summary, we are all tremendously pleased with the performance of all the members of the team, who were not only representing their schools but also Grantham and the county of Lincolnshire. We hope that this experience will encourage them to continue their basketball journey through secondary school and beyond!"
